PreK – 3rd grade educators workshop
Build a wacky roller that moves in whimsical ways or makes surprising sounds as it scoots, wobbles, and tumbles down a ramp.
Things that roll captivate young children! Through their innate curiosity and playful exploration of rolling and sliding objects, children investigate and think about the relationships between the various characteristics of rolling objects and the way they roll. They become familiar with a variety of STEAM concepts like gravity, movement, friction, speed, force and slope.
In this highly interactive 2-hour STEAM workshop on Ramps and Rollers, Cate Heroman, a nationally recognized author and educator, along with the Learning Innovation team from Knock Knock Children’s Museum, will lead teachers through a series of hands-on experiences that will introduce them to a variety of ways to capture children’s attention and encourage them to explore the real-world “phenomena” of motion and to engage them in science and engineering.

Cate Heroman is the author of NAEYC’s Making and Tinkering with STEM, an early childhood consultant and volunteer advisor to Knock Knock Children’s Museum in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A nationally recognized educator and author of numerous publications, she has been an early childhood classroom teacher, state administrator, trainer, facilitator, and developer of curriculum and assessment materials. One of Cate’s greatest joys in life is making and tinkering with her four grandchildren and inspiring creative thinking and problem solving in all children.

Candy Jones has forty-five years of experience in early childhood and elementary education and most recently became the Director of Learning Innovation at Knock Knock Children’s Museum, where children from birth through age eight come to learn through engaging, playful activities and experiences. She is an author of numerous publications, an experienced trainer, a speaker at national and state conferences, a curriculum developer, a former preschool, kindergarten, and primary grade teacher, and a state early childhood specialist. Prior to joining Knock Knock’s team, Candy served as an independent consultant providing services to public and nonpublic schools/districts, Head Start programs, state education agencies, universities, and nonprofit organizations.

Alexandra Pearson has devoted her career to fine art and museums after receiving a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics and Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies in 2013. Desiring a move back to Louisiana, she joined the original Learning Innovation team at Knock Knock Children’s Museum in 2017 after working at several museums in Arkansas and Tennessee. She loves making and tinkering and finding ways to help others make connections to things they already know. She believes in the low-floor, high-ceiling, and wide walls approach when designing activities for children at Knock Knock. She hopes to inspire everyone she works with to think creatively to help solve problems in their lives.
